(WPRI) – Two brothers charged in connection with a homicide and arson in Hopkinton faced the judge Friday morning.

Jared and Matthew Tefft were both ordered held without bail following their arraignment at Fourth Division District Court.

Jared Tefft is accused of setting his home on fire Wednesday after killing Peter Newman, 44.

The medical examiner has ruled that Newman died from smoke and soot inhalation, thermal injuries, and blunt force impact to the head. Officials said that indicates Newman was alive at the time the fire broke out.

Police believe Newman was staying at Jared Tefft’s home when the two men got into some sort of physical altercation that escalated. The two men apparently met during a previous prison stay.

Matt Tefft’s fiance is defending him.

“At about 11:00p.m. Jared came to our house. He’s freaking out. Matt answered the door and [Jared] said I think I may have killed somebody. He’s like I don’t know. I don’t know what happened. I know that Pete had attacked him. He had said at our house that Pete had attacked him with a knife, which he did because Jared had a wound on his hand. And Jared just snapped. He flipped out. He is very agressive, violent behavior and especially when he drinks vodka,” she told Eyewitness News Reporter Sean Daly outside court.

Tefft is charged with murder, first-degree arson and conspiracy.

His brother, Matthew Tefft, is charged with aiding and abetting first-degree arson and conspiracy to commit arson.

Rhode Island State Police responded to the Woody Hill Road home around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, investigating possible violence. Once on scene, crews noticed flames and called the fire department.

Police later located Newman’s body inside the home.

PROVIDENCE, R.I (WPRI) – You may have a flight booked, but as you’re well aware, one of these ongoing winter storms could foul up your plans to fly. So knowing what to do before the storm hits is key to avoiding airport snags.

Snow can put you in the mood for a Winter getaway, but it can also keep you grounded. So know your options before you travel.

When dealing with weather-related delays or cancellations compensation and refund policies vary across airlines. Check out the “contract of carriage” on the airline’s website.

You might be inclined to stay home and work the phone or the web to change your flight plan, but experts tell us that sometimes braving the trek to the airport can pay off.

“Most people are going to take the advice, to stay home and not go to the airport.” advised George Hobica of Airfarewatchdog, com. “So, if there is a flight that gets out, you’re gonna be on that flight because you were at the airport at the right time.” he said.

After the storm, a backlog of travelers can result in overbooked flights that get you bumped. But federal rules say you don’t always have to take an airline’s voucher for future travel.

“Usually they’re going to try to give you a voucher, but if you’re involuntarily bumped, you can get a full cash payment. Sometimes if you’re voluntarily bumped, in other words you say, “Bump me,” you have less leeway. But you can always try to ask for the cash.” added Hobica.

Remember to contact the airline the day before, if a big storm is expected on the day you’re flying and you know flights will be canceled, You’ll be able to re-schedule, and you won’t end up dealing with the huge rush the day after.

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – With more snow predicted for this week, roofing experts have voiced their concern for people trying to clean their roofs themselves.

This growing concern coming in the wake of the collapse of Captain Isaac Paine Elementary School’s roof in Foster and a terrible store’s roof collapse in Stoughton, Mass.

Regardless of the amount of snow piling up on, it is still dangerous for an unexperienced individual to attempt to climb and remove it, so the professionals have advised to leave the work to them.

“We’ll go out and shovel off the roof, we’ll strip shingles and the sheathing and we’ll go up and marry new trusses onto the existing ones,” said Terry Lynch of Lynch Roofing Company in Warwick.

Lynch said with snow continuously piling up, his company has been working around the clock to clear away the snow on homes and businesses.

He also said the heavy, wet snow has been causing major problems for roofs throughout Southern New England.

“It’s definitely a problem with the weight. These buildings have been designed for a certain amount of weight and it’s starting to exceed that,” he commented.

Workers at his roofing company strongly urge homeowners to not attempt to climb on their roofs themselves.

However, anyone can check for warning signs of a problematic roof.

“You’ll be able to see them from outside. You’ll see where the trusses won’t be as straight, you’ll see them actually cave in,” Lynch cautioned.

In addition to cleaning the roof off, Lynch warns to keep gutters cleaned as well to prevent serious water damage.

A secondary Warwick school takes a stand against bullying and the results are being turned into a documentary for the world.

The subject may seem a little retro – signs of peace, posters and cards of peace – but the message is simple, universal and timeless.

The idea for the week of peace held in December was Kim Mahoney Greenberg, a graduate of Pilgrim High School 1974 whose children are now 10 and 12-grade school students.

“The three schools of high, this fall, for some reason in Warwick, 9 and 10-degree were coming with lot of anxiety and much anger and frustration.” Therefore, was dating this intimidation and fighting, “Greenberg said.”

She enlisted Peregrine senior Brian Young, who has been indigenous around of a camera for years do skate boarding, videos to be his cameraman.

“Hope only obtains and spreads the word peace, only promote peace throughout high school”, said Young.

The plan is to show not only this documentary in the Pilgrim College soon but share it with other schools in Rhode Island, adjacent States, and possibly even the world.

How it feels young for being part of the solution?

“I feel good about.” I feel that I am doing something for my community, “said Young.”

Is both now swimming in everything, so modeling a piece of one hour on peace, compassion and empathy.

“In the process, which I saw and I felt was completely measurable.” And the later is still more measurable, “Greenberg said.”

Follow-up with students and faculty interviews showed he worked week of peace.

“They said they felt that there were greater unity.” We are aware that we are more than different alike. “There was a change of more peaceful feeling, full power, said Greenberg.”

The documentary must be finished in a few weeks.

In spite of the Church of Christ has a large congregation, the new parish, adopted, it would use the Emmanuel building that has more potential for expansion.

Gunn, said that a merger would enable his Church to move from “survival mode” in “mission mode”.
