Rhode Island unwilling to commit to the America’s Cup up within a period set by the host city of the selection team Friday but that should not prejudice the possibilities of Newport because the people behind the bid is working closely with organizers, superior economic development of the State official said Wednesday.
The State is a week or two away from knowing how much would cost it to host the 34th Cup in Newport Fort Adams State Park in 2013, said Keith Stokes, head of the State Economic Development Corp. Said that the State is working closely with BMW Oracle, but still do not know the exact requirements of the international sailing competition prestigious.
“We cannot do any formal commitment before we know what we are committing ourselves to”, said Stokes. “Our goal is to present our plan better.” … We are not able to make the final decision by 12/31. “They understand.”
A spokesperson for the America’s Cup did not immediately return messages (called and e-mailed him) seeking comment.
America’s Cup event Authority said tell participating teams on Friday where races are held. Stokes, said the team might choose to accept Newport as host city conditionally and still meet its self-imposed deadline.
Newport hosted the America’s Cup from 1930 to 1983. San Francisco and Italy are also fighting for the race. San Francisco was considered the winner until the beginning of this month, when an agreement with the city to host the Cup fell apart.
Mike Trainor, a spokesman for the Governor of Rhode Island-elected Lincoln Chafee, said that he believes that BMW Oracle knows that your needs are still evolving and the reluctance of the State to commit to the event before Friday should not harm their chances.
Said Chafee was landing at the Cup in your highest priority in the run-up to its inauguration on January 4 and had worked with the Christmas weekend to make it happen. But reiterated the position of Chafee who has fought with massive budget deficit in recent years, the State should not compromise anything to know the cost.
“Chafee elected Governor of not going to play with the $ taxpayers without knowledge of the risk and reward ratio”, said Trainor.
Also on Wednesday, the Chamber of Commerce of Newport published a report that calculates the positive economic impact of landing event in $ 1.1 billion. Said that more than 7,800 could create jobs – large numbers in a State that has suffered some of the highest unemployment rates in the nation. The unemployment rate was 11.6% in November.
Trainor said Chafee recognizes the benefits of hosting career.
“Capturing the Cup is an important platform from which the State can initiate an economic recovery,” he said.
